Secure Dial-up Substation Access

Reliable and secure communication to substation devices is of critical importance to today’s bulk electricity provider. Utilities need equipment that can withstand harsh environments, provide robust communications for many years and comply with cyber security regulations. Many remote substations are still accessible only through a standard analog telephone connection. For those situations, the Industrial Defender Dial-up Gateway offers a solution.

The Industrial Defender Dial-up Gateway is built on the reliability of the Teltone SLSS* (Substation Line Sharing Switch) platform, with added hardware and software security features. The Dial-up Gateway can be used in either of two modes, depending on security requirements:

  • Secure Mode: When used as part of an Industrial Defender Access Manager system, the full benefit of the Dial-up Gateway’s security features can be realized.
  • Standalone Mode: In this mode, the Dial-up Gateway operates similar to the SLSS, either as standalone, or with an existing Teltone Polling Controller.

The Dial-up Gateway offers many features for enhancing substation security and reliability, as well as reducing communications costs:

  • Protects substation modems from unauthorized access.
  • Enables sharing a single substation telephone line between up to eight devices (such as telephones, modems connected to fault locating relays, meters, etc., and fax machines), thus eliminating expensive telephone line installation and monthly charges for briefly used modem lines.
  • Supports firmware updates from Access Manager.
  • Uploads call logs from nonvolatile memory to Access Manager.
  • Enhances on-site worker safety by giving priority to outgoing calls.
  • Obtains high reliability and availability by providing IEEE Standard C37.90 SWC (Surge Withstand Capability) protection to attached devices.
  • Available in both AC and DC versions.
  • Backward compatible with previous models.
